What is SSR?
During the 3R reading period, we have Sustained Silent Reading. Hoover High School defines SSR as. “Reading what you want to read, with no book reports, no questions at the end of the chapter, and not having to finish the book if you don’t want to. Everyone reads at the same time as the students read. Non-accountability is emphasized. All adults model.”

When do we do SSR?
Twenty minutes each day during our 3R.

Who does SSR?
Every person, staff and student participates each day.

Why do we do SSR?
There are several important reasons why we do this, including the fact that students need to read 1,000,000 words a year to stay at grade level. Other important reasons are:

  • To increase students’ reading achievement
  • To improve students’ spelling, grammar, vocabulary, and writing
  • To improve reading test scores
  • To improve students’ motivation to read for pleasure outside of school
